Our professional, experienced team is here for you no matter where you are on your journey - whether you’re looking for an initial consultation or already wearing braces. We want your experience to be as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. Through modern technology, braces are more accessible and less problematic than ever. When problems do pop up, we know they can cause discomfort and concern so we’re available for orthodontic emergencies. When it comes to the most common orthopedic problems, there are things you can do at home that will help resolve them or at least make you more comfortable until you’re able to be seen.
At-Home Orthodontic Tricks and Tips
The following tips and tricks can help relieve minor problems that may arise while receiving braces treatment:
Sore Mouth
Braces can cause soreness at times, especially right after you get them and after adjustments. To relieve pain:
- Take over-the-counter pain medication like acetaminophen
- Place a warm washcloth or heating pad against the jaws
- Gargle lukewarm salt water
Most discomfort is simply a byproduct of shifting teeth, but sometimes braces can also cause sores or irritation along the cheeks, tongue, lips, or gums. In addition to the above recommendations, sores can be treated at home by:
- Covering sharp brackets or wires with orthodontic wax
- Apply an over-the-counter dental numbing gel
- Staying hydrated
- Avoiding spicy or acidic food and drink
Irritating Wires
When wires become annoying by rubbing against the inside of your mouth, you can gently move the wire away from the area with a cotton swab or eraser. If it won’t budge, try using a small piece of orthodontic wax or cotton to cover the end of it. If the wire has broken, try putting it back using sterilized tweezers. For very painful or stubborn wires, you can use a pair of sterilized nail clippers to cut the end of it. You may want to recruit help for that one!
Loose or Broken Brackets
Loose or broken brackets will need to be addressed in the office, but there are things you can do while waiting for your appointment. If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it as it is and cover it with wax to help prevent irritation. If the bracket has completely fallen off, keep it in a safe place to bring to your appointment. If it becomes necessary to cut and remove the bracket, use sterilized fingernail clippers. It’s best to avoid chewing on the side of the problem bracket until it’s been fixed.
Prioritize Prevention
Some orthodontic issues are simply unavoidable, but there are steps you can take to help prevent other common problems from taking place.
- Avoid foods that are hard, sticky, and chewy
- Brush and floss regularly
- Protect your mouth by wearing a mouthguard for any sports-related activities
- Follow instructions from your orthodontist, including keeping up with regular visits as needed.
