We’re closing in on summer and we at San Antonio Orthodontics are just as happy as anyone. However, as your source for braces, Invisalign, and other orthodontics in San Antonio, we want to bring attention to some potential dental troubles that you may run into during this sunny season. We’d like to give you a few summer tips for keeping your teeth safe so that you can spend less time at the office of your San Antonio children’s orthodontist and more time outside having fun!
Limit Your
Time in the Pool
During the summer, one of the most popular things to do is to go swimming. For all of us who don’t live near the beach, that means that we just go to a swimming pool. But having said that, did you know that staying in a swimming pool for too long can actually have a harmful impact on a person’s teeth? If a person spends over six hours a week in a swimming pool, a condition known as swimmer’s calculus can appear. Swimmer’s calculus can cause hard, brown or yellow deposits to develop on a person’s teeth, which can end up staining them. This occurs because swimming pools have treatment chemicals in them. If your teeth are in contact with them for too long, you may develop this condition. Thankfully, swimmer’s calculus can be treated with cosmetic dentistry treatments, though your best option is to just limit your time in the pool.
Wear a Mouthguard
When You Play Sports
Summer is almost here, which means that more people will be out playing sports. Whether it’s football, baseball, softball, or basketball, many people will be taking advantage of the beautiful weather to get some outdoor exercise. Unfortunately, these sports can also pose a risk to your dental health. Dentists estimate that around 13 to 39 percent of all dental injuries occur while playing sports. However, a great way to limit this risk is with a mouthguard. Mouthguards will help protect your teeth in case you suffer any kind of facial trauma. It’s been suggested that mouthguards actually prevent over 200,000 injuries to the mouth each year. Do your teeth a favor and wear a mouthguard before playing any contact sports.
